Polka dots are retro. Cream orange is retro. Polka dot, tie waist, cream orange shorts are definitely retro!
But are wedges retro? I wasn’t quite sure how to answer that one, but thanks to a quick Google search I have a little wedge history to share with you! They first came into popularity in Italy during the 1930s when Salvatore Ferragamo introduced the design. He was no longer able to obtain steel for his heels due to trading sanctions against Italy, so “[he] experimented with pieces of Sardinian cork, pushing and gluing and fixing and trimming until the entire space between the sole and the heel was blocked solid.” Wedges were a huge success within a matter of weeks! They became increasingly popular during WWII (early 1940s) because war efforts required rubber and leather, making cork and wood shoes (aka wedges) all the more appealing. While the love of wedges eventually waned, they came back with a vengeance in the 70s for both men and women alike. The mid 2000s also saw a huge spike in the popularity of wedges! I can count on one hand the pairs of wedges I’ve owned in my lifetime, but I do like knowing the history behind them 🙂
And on another, completely different note, a few weeks ago I had about $600 worth of Victoria’s Secret bras stolen at the laundromat and I’ve slowly been buying a new one here and there. At about $45 a pop, bras are definitely not cheap. I used to work at VS back in the day, so thankfully a lot of the ones that were stolen I had been gifted as an employee (they are really generous with giving free bras for new launches)! Anyways, the point of this ramble was that I was thankful that a regular strapless bra wouldn’t have worked with this top because I haven’t been able to replace that one yet! Since the bodysuit was a thicker material, I was able to get away with sticky adhesive *phew*
